playing live
After winning local Michigan State talent quests as a percussionist with his high school band, Calvin was inspired to make music his life. He was soon touring the US and Europe with the likes of jazz keyboardist Eddie Russ and legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt. He moved to LA in the 1980s and worked as a session drummer with producers Rodney Trotter, Phil Perry and Kevin Dorsey. Arriving in Australia in 1988, Calvin quickly established himself on the local music scene and relished in the diversity on offer. He became a foundation member of African drumming ensemble Doudoumba and toured with The Party Boys featuring Joe Walsh from the Eagles and Kevin Borich. The 1990's saw him tour with artists and bands such as Marcia Hines, Christine Anu, Coloured Stone, SWOOP, Dale Barlow, Carl Orr, Renee Geyer and Marlene Cummins. He played regular gigs with the late great Jackie Orszacsky and continues to collaborate with sound artist Colin Offord on projects in Australia and overseas. In recent years, Calvin has toured with indie/soul/pop band Philadelphia Grand Jury, Deniz Tek's Soulmovers, Bruce Mathiske's Rhythm Express, world music artist Yeshe and African groove band Keyim Ba. In 2003 he formed his own band Arabesk. In 2016 Arabesk released their third award-winning album and in May 2018 they released a live album. With a growing following in Japan, Arabesk toured there again for the fifth time in October 2019. Since 2020 Calvin has been adding jazz to the mix at Restaurant Hubert in Sydney. In his role as curator, compere and resident jazz drummer, he has been instrumental in creating a jazz venue that guarantees music seven nights a week.
